BENGALURU:
Southern India experienced intense rainfall on Wednesday, prompting weather officials to issue a red alert for flash floods and landslides.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted “heavy to very heavy” rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala. Since Tuesday, heavy rain and strong winds have struck the region, leading to school closures and disruptions in train services.
In Chennai, residents resorted to using boats on flooded streets, with water levels rising higher than car engines in some areas.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin announced that all relief efforts were being conducted “in full swing” and declared that government-run restaurants would provide free meals.
During the monsoon season, severe rain-related floods and landslides are a frequent occurrence across South Asia.
